Six months after relaunching the route between San José (SJO), Costa Rica, and San Juan (SJU), Puerto Rico, Avianca confirmed that it will cease operating this route in October, a service that had shortened travel time between the two destinations.
“At Avianca we constantly review the performance of our network, with the purpose of allocating our capacity to those routes that need it the most. For this reason, and after evaluating the performance of the San José (SJO) – San Juan (SJU) route, operated by Avianca Costa Rica S.A., “we have decided to suspend it as of October 24, 2025” the date on which the last flight will operate.
They also assured that passengers with confirmed reservations will be re-accommodated through other points in their network, among other protection measures.
The route began operating on March 31, 2025, with flights available on Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays, arriving at Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport at 12:40 p.m. and returning to Juan Santamaría International Airport at 2:10 p.m.
The three new weekly frequencies added 16,200 seats to the existing inventory. At launch, an economic impact of $6 million was projected during the initial season. It is worth noting that this route resumed service this year after two decades without direct flights between both destinations.
Now, travelers interested in visiting Costa Rica will once again have to make a connection in Panama—a journey that can extend to nine hours of flying, compared to the three hours of direct travel from Puerto Rico.
